The Ortlieb gear is bombproof, waterproof, and a good handlebar bag is a main part of a bikepacking setup. These come in two sizes and what you choose will depend like with other items, what you plan to do with it. First, many folks put either their tent (with poles strapped on front) or sleeping bag in this bag. When doing this, leave the stuff sacks at home and use the waterproof roll instead. While I can stuff my regular sleeping bag in this size, it leaves little room for a jacket or other soft item that I might need. If I’m going ultra light, then a bivy (or tarp), ground cloth, and light bag or quilt fits no problem. It’s essentially a 9L bag so make sure you can fit what you want to in it. Download the spec sheet from Ortlieb to be certain.
If you’re running drop bars, this size makes a lot of sense. One drawback on handlebar bags on gravel or other drop bar bikes is the large bags either don’t fit, or take up most or all of the space between the brake levers. While most gravel bikes run wider or flared bars, make sure it’ll fit and that you’re OK with having some areas you might rub on with your hands while reaching for the brakes. Not an issue on flat bar bikes.
NOTE: pricing is size dependent. Plus $10 for size medium. Get that here.
The ORTLIEB Handlebar-Pack S is a member of the compact class of bikepacker handlebar rolls. With a length of only 40 cm, this waterproof handlebar roll is the right selection for bikepackers with off-road drop bars, road-bike handlebars or hybrid-bike handlebars. Although this handlebar roll has a narrow width and is especially lightweight, it offers a payload of 9 liters, which means it gives you ample space for large-volume, but lightweight items such as sleeping bags and sleeping pads. The roll closures on both sides enable quick and convenient access while reliably keeping your stuff dry even in the pouring rain.
The Handlebar-Pack S can be securely attached to any handlebar type using the mounting system, which consists of spacers and two sturdy and highly adhesive Velcro straps. The special material that stiffens the inside of the bag and its secure attachment to your head tube guarantee stability even on rough terrain.
